About Lipper Ratings
Learn from independent ratings
Lipper Inc. has earned an excellent reputation in the mutual fund industry as an independent-analysis company that provides peer-based mutual fund comparisons in the form of relative rankings. Lipper provides relative rankings of mutual funds. It ranks mutual funds according to a peer-based performance system, which measures returns according to specific time frames and fund classifications (small, mid, multi and large-cap).
Rankings by peer group
Mutual fund returns are assigned a rank that places each fund within a group — the lower the number rank, the better the fund performed compared to other funds in the classification group. For example, a rank of 24 indicates that the fund has the 24th best rate of return in its category. In effect, Lipper ranking reflects how well the fund performed compared to its peers for a given time period.
Rankings by percentile measures
Because the number of mutual funds in a classification group can vary widely, Lipper also calculates a percentile measure for each fund, as seen in the following example.
The percentile measures show that Fund A performed better than 58% of its peer group for the time period.
Although Lipper, Inc., rankings are highly regarded in the mutual fund industry as a historical indicator of relative performance, they should not be used as the sole factor of whether or not to purchase any particular fund. Past performance is no guarantee of future results.
